Computer Won't Boot - No Beeps, No Video Output

    Hello,

So I recently assembled a new computer, connected everything started it up - got no output even though I could hear drives spinning and everything "appeared" to work, so I stripped it right back to just the motherboard, CPU (heatsink) and PSU - I do realise that it won't POST without RAM but the motherboard should at least beep to say that there is no RAM but again, nothing.

I've sent for a replacement motherboard as that's what i'm "assuming" it is, do you think this will make any difference or could it be something else?

    Thanks!

Did you connect the internal speakers? Otherwise you don't hear the beeps.

A friend of mine has almost the same problem. All lights on, drive is spinning, keyboard lights flashes. If memory removed ... a lot of beeps. But with memory ... no beep at all. No video (monitor shows orange light instead of green). Monitor is working on another pc without problems. Doesn't start from dvd as well (don't know if it's enabled in bios)

very few modern motherboards have speakers, you need to plug your own into the header next to the power and hard drive led ports.

did you plug in the 4/8pin pci express connector at the top right of the motherboard? thats a common thing to miss, and will give the no signal message.
Even without ram a mobo should at least show the splash screen.

oh and welcome to the forum

But what if it can beep (if memory is out it beeps)? When memory is in, no beep at all, no video (only amber light). Monitor works on another pc without problems. It is an agp card http://inf05.hageveld.nl/~u9092/hard...s/agp_slot.jpg (the brown slot). Just click card in and attach monitor(?)

should motherboard beep without a graphics card?

well the OP gets no Beeps period, which makes me think there is no speaker, ive never ran one, until i got one free with my NZXT phantom case.

a motherboard wont beep if a GPU is missing, as its not an essential component, most servers run without even a monitor being attached.

im still betting its a simple pci express power connector, as im sure even integrated graphics draw power from it.

The internal speaker is connected, even put it in the opposite way just to make sure it wasn't me. It has integrated graphics - fully connected up all power, the little CPU 4pin one and ATX+4pin on the other side of the motherboard. It just seems baffling as to what's going on with it. There don't appear to be any other sockets for power.

This is the motherboard by the way: ASRock > Products > 880GMH/U3S3

    And thanks for the welcome!
    Thanks!

Could be a dodgy motherboard. Even some slip past quality control

One thing I did notice though - not sure if this would affect anything - the BIOS on the board by default is Rev1.40 - but, i'm putting an AMD Bulldozer 8150 in which isn't support until Rev1.50 - would this completely stop the motherboard in it's tracks? It does say it's AM3+ compatible on the box (which must mean the BIOS that comes with it)?

Ah! Well that's a different stroy! An unsupported CPU is the same as no CPU at all.

Does it support bios updates by flash? As some modern board allow the bios to be upgraded without any components. If not you'll be needing an AM2 processor.

That is quite interesting, it seems the board has something called "Instant Flash" ASRock > Instant Flash but it does require POST which brings me back to my point - Can I POST without a CPU? and even with no CPU shouldn't the motherboard still beep?

    Thanks!
