Buying New Hard Drive I currently have a 160 GB HD for my OS and Docs. I am going to get a 500 GB HD and replace it. I need to keep the price under $100 so a SSD is out of the question. What specs do I need to look for to insure I get the fastest drive for the buck. Also I would like to find out the specs on my current 160 GB. It was in the computer when I purchased it so I do not have a manual. How can I find out the specs? Thanks,

Speed it rotates (5400, or 7200)
Cache (the bigger the better)
IDE, or EIDE (if internal), ATA, or sata.
If external USB 2 or 3, or firewire.
I would also check out what their warranty is. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavillion dv-7 1005 Tx OS WCP ONLY CPU 2@2.4 Memory 4 gigs Graphics Card Nvidia 9600M Sound Card HD built-in Monitor(s) Displays 17" Wxga Screen Resolution 1440x900 Cooling none Internet Speed 45Mb down 5Mb up |

you should be able to find your hdd model in device manager - then you can google for its specs.
probably the most important thing to look for is the speed - you want 7200 rpm
sata should be quicker, and makes life easier with much neater cabling, so long as your mobo supports it - it looks like your board has two sata slots - are they used at present?
also do bear in mind that hdd prices are still pretty high following last year's floods in thailand - prices are slowly starting to come back down, i believe. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number mickey megabyte 1234 OS ultimate 64 sp1 CPU i5 2500K 3.3@4.2GHz Motherboard MSI P67A-GD53 Memory 8 gigs GSkill Ripjaws 1600 Graphics Card amd hd6950 Sound Card creative x-fi gamer Monitor(s) Displays samsung 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard saitek eclipse ii Mouse logitech g3 PSU antec 550 Case antec three hundred Cooling i'm a cooling fan Hard Drives ocz vertex 2e 60 gig, samsung f3 1tb, buffalo 2tb ext Internet Speed about 4 Mbps Other Info i love win7 |

Not a good time to need a new hard drive Neww egg doesn't have the greatest prices right now. Here is my recommendation from Amazon.
WD Blue - good all around performer. $89: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita.../dp/B00461G3MS
500GB black, $108: Amazon.com: Western Digital Caviar Black 500 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Desktop Hard Drive Bulk/OEM - WD5002AALX: Computers & Accessories
These are better prices than newegg. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home built (GeneO industries)/Model 2 OS Windows 7 64 bit SP1 CPU i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz, 1.256V 120 GFlop (with AVX) Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB (4GBx4) 1600MHz G.skill Ripjaws X 8-8-8-24 Graphics Card Asus Nvidia ENGTS450, 1GB 4030 MHz DDR5 clock, 915 Mhz GPU Sound Card Onboard Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays NEC Spectraview 2490WUXi-SV Screen Resolution 1920 x 1200 Keyboard HP Wireless Mouse HP wireless PSU Antec TruePower New 650W Case Fractal Design "Define R3" Cooling CM Hyper 212+ push/pull, 5 120mm, 1 140mm case fans Hard Drives Crucial 128GB M4 (system), 2x WD Caviar 1TB Black internal (data), 1x Seagate 750G Barracuda Internal (backups), 1x WD Blue 6Gb/s 320GB Internal, 1x Corsair F40 SSD for cache, 1x 2TB eSata WD20EARS Green, 2x 500GB Seagate external USB, 1x 350GB exte Internet Speed 25.7 Mb/s down, 4.5 Mb/s up Other Info USB 3.0 x4 , SATA III x4, eSATA x3, SATA II x4, USB 2.0 x8. 2 Samsung DVD R/W drives.

Good ones Gene. I have a buddy with a WD Black 1TB and he said it really runs fast. I believe his has 64MB cache which may help out.

This Hybrid SSD, usually can be found on sale for $99: Newegg.ca - seagate xt
You'll need a 3.5" HDD bracket to mount the hard drive and it should be partitioned and used as you main drive for OS and docs. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit CPU Intel i5-2520M Memory Corsair 8GB DDR3-1600 Graphics Card AMD HD-6850M Sound Card Realtek Dolby Advanced HD Screen Resolution 1600x900 Mouse Logitech M510 | Logitech G400 Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB | Hitachi Travelstar 750GB Internet Speed 35 Mbps |

Thank you all for the info. That helps a lot. The prices are still up there I see. I had bought 500 GB about two years ago for $54. No prices near that now I see. One of you said this is a bad time to need a new HD. Since I have a birthday in two months and Mom has more money that I do, I think I will through a few hints around. Thanks again. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Windows 7 Home Premium 32-Bit - Build 7600 SP1 CPU Pentium 4 3.0 Ghtz Motherboard ECS 671T-M Memory Kingston 4 GB DDR2 667 Graphics Card Zotac GeForce 9400 GT 512MB Sound Card Sound Blaster Audigy SE 24-Bit Monitor(s) Displays Samsung Sync Master 940 = 19 inch Screen Resolution 1440 X 900 Keyboard Microsoft Natural 4000 Mouse Microsoft Custom Optical 3000 PSU 500 watt Case NZXT Apollo - Silver Cooling Air Cooled Hard Drives Western Digital 160 GB == Western Digital 500 GB Internet Speed AT&T DSL Wireless Network |
