How can I tell if my computer will support a PCI 3.0 USB express card. It is a Dell XPS410 and is about 4 years old

Hiya pal and welcome to the forums.

According to your system specs your mainboard doesn't support USB 3 Dell™ XPS™ 410 Service Manual

But if you plug in a pci express usb 3.0 expansion card

then you should be fine to run USB 3

It probaly will. Check the card you chose whether it is 1x, 2x or 4x and then check your mobo for those ports.

I have a Dell 580S. I put a USB 3.0 card in it. If you have the correct slots, it will work pretty good. I recommend you look inside the case and see if you have the required extra power cable it requires. My Dell had no spare power cables at all. I had to do some 'creative wiring' to make it work. But, it works good now, and I have some spare power cables.

The only downside is you will then look at any collection of USB 2 external HDDs and sigh.

And it gets worse when you also have eSata. They sure have a tendency to mushroom.
