Unable to eject WD portable hard-drive

    Hello,

I got a new Seagate 500GB HD (sorry about the wrong thread title). For the first two weeks or so, I could eject my HD through "Safely Remove".....but since then I get the usual "Generic volume is still in use" message, inspite of closing all processes that might possibly be using it.

I keep the HD connected to my PC virtually all the time, even when I shut down and reboot. But every now and then, I need to disconnect it. And to do that, I have to shut down the computer first and then disconnect it.

Whenever I update Windows, I see that a temporary folder is created in the HD while the updates are being downloaded which has led me to think that a process uses the HD but I can't find out which one it is and how to terminate it properly.

There are no problems when I use the HD in other computers.

Hello wizardof and welcome to the forums

    Try doing this:

Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program

To determine which program is causing your problems.

Don't know if you can get to Resource Monitor (via Task manager) and on the "handles" screen, in the search box, type in your driveletter followed by a colon to see if something comes up.

Ok, I did as you said. Here's what I found.....

I played some music on WMP and closed it but inspite of that "wmpnetwk.exe" is running.

tom982, I gonna try your suggestion now.

So how do I go about properly terminating these processes or stopping them from using my HD?

    Appreciate your support.

Once we've found the culprit, we can work from there :)

Disable System Restore for your "F" Drive.
