How to fix "USB device not recognized"

    Hi,

A couple of days ago, I started getting a "USB Device Not Recognized" error with my two USB 2.0 ports from devices that previously worked for those ports (e.g. my mouse and flash drive). They're still working on my USB 3.0 port, but not the two USB 2.0 ports. When I click into the properties for the "Unknown Device" that shows up after I plug anything into the USB 2.0 ports, it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I think I started getting the error after I plugged in a new laptop fan that I got. It failed to install the driver for the fan and has been giving this error ever since.

I've tried taking out the battery and leaving the computer overnight, system restore, and I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the hubs through device manager. But nothing is working so far.

I have an HP Pavilion dm4.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

When you remove the battery, do you also remove the AC power? Do you hold down the power button for 30 seconds to complete the circuit and drain all power from components with both the AC adapter and battery removed? Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English); while it is not your model, it is true for all computers, not just HP Pavilions.

    Thanks for the replies!

I followed the tutorial for the general fix for USB Driver a couple of times, and also the procedure for hard reset, but I'm still getting the same error message. Sometimes I'm also getting a "driver failed to install".

I also reinstalled Windows 7, but the problem still persists.

Was this a clean install of Windows 7 or a repair install?

I used the system recovery option from the HP Recovery Manager.

In that case, this sounds like a hardware issue. Is the machine still under warranty?

That's what I was afraid of Unfortunately, the warranty expired. But I'll try to get it replaced or just make do with the one port left (and just hope that one doesn't fail on me as well).

    Thanks for all the help!

inside of your machine ..You might want to check to see if that any wires that should be attached aren't or maybe loose, I had that problem once before and that was my solution and I hope that is it yours
