I read an exceptional article in the last few months about disk drives. It discussed longevity, failure rates, failure rate TRENDS (a drive that runs a long time tends to run a REALLY long time before failure). It also compared user drives to Enterprise-class (business) class drives. It found NO better reliablity with Enterprise class drives.

I don't have a link handy but ultimately, it's a luck of the draw what you buy.

I don't think you can get the accurate information you need. All you can get are anecdotes from whoever reads your post and the anecdotes are only one person's experience.

I'm not aware of any accepted large-scale controlled study about which drive brand has fewer complaints or higher reliability.

If I were in your shoes, I would try Western Digital and hope.

I am in the market for one myself as one of mine is getting full. I have always used Western Digital and will buy one again. All drives are so expensive at this time. I am hoping to hold off until they go down a bit. You do not have that luxury since yours died. Good luck.

I have a Caviar Blue 500 GB. The Caviar Black is a bit more expensive so I am guessing they are a bit better. How much better I am not sure.

The blue ones and the black ones are nearly the same performance. The blacks have a longer warranty and have a slightly faster random access time, but come at the expense of being noisier.

I have a pile of WD blue's at work and I like them.

With that said, I also have a pile of Samsung 2TB SpinPoint F4's and have had no problems with them at all.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, but if the drive is less than one year old, why not have it replaced under warranty?
