Unnessary startup programs can definitely slow the boot process. I always try to disable all that are not absolutely needed.

Gary, For a test, disable all startup programs and see what that yields. I use WinPatrol to manage the startups. A lot easier than msconfig.

I know during my Windows installs that the Windows flag would rotate about 30% while restarting(during all of the driver installations) until it hit the ASMedia controller and from that point on, the flag would rotate all the way. I know it's not very scientific, but I did 4 installs and it happened at the same place, every time. It still boots up fast enough that I don't worry about it though :)

My times are 31 seconds using a Samsung 830 256GB SSD. But, Gary is right, I have AS Media USB 3.0 plus, if you have the SATA 3 AS Media, it has it's own boot screen that will add 5 seconds to startup times. I know because I tested it with it enabled and disabled. I guess that's the problem with having a board like mine with everything in the world on it. Everything takes time to load, but because of it, you get all the extra goodies. I think I would rather have the extra goodies than save 10 seconds on boot times which I do about once a day, sometimes.

I agree too. I think that's the real benefit of SSDs IMO. You don't have to sacrifice very long boot times in order to run all the startup programs that you want, and you also get the snappiness from ssd right after cold boot. I would just set msconfig to run on normal startup on an ssd.

I had Weatherbug, in Startup, aside from Security, I got it down to 24.6 seconds. These ASUS boards are long winded in their POSTing too.
Thanks Wolfgang and company for your thoughts. My total reboot time was 44 seconds this last time, down from 60-ish. Good for me.

I've installed Office 2013, and it sure is speedy opening. About the same time as a blink to open any of the component apps.

Based on advice I reverted to Intel RST 11.2 with considerable improvement in my benches. Unfortunately I don't have a copy of my earlier actual runs using 11.6 and 11.7, but they were definitely not at the same level.

Your 4K times are fantastic - and that is really all that counts for the OS.
