Works very well here for me. I have one of the first-gen batches as well. While yes, its not as fast as a SSD drive. Reading and booting from it is a lot faster on my old laptop. That is why I can recommend it. Also, if the OP is like me where my laptop is my main machine, storage space is paramount. A 500 GB SSD would be very expensive.

I actually need more then 500 GB of space... D:

I would try to get the drive replaced first. If so, and you decide on an SSD, you can always sell the HDD off. Right now is a great time to show for an SSD, because the prices have dropped. HDDs are sky high right now thanks to some flooding and panic attacks with inventories.

And yeah you would have to call them to arrange the pickup of the laptop. If that HP Care Pack is for real, that's pretty nice.

Thanks for the reply.

If it's under warranty I may aswell get a replacement sent while it's available for free.
It would save me the money for the time being, and I'll start to save up for an SSD Hard Drive in the future.

I've not phoned them, I've contacted them online, well I left a Case Report here: https://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/si...blic/scm/home/

With what my problem is, and what trouble shooting I've done.
I'm not sure if that is the right place, or wether I should ring them. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this stuff lol. I never even thought about the warranty, untill it was mentioned on this thread haa.

Also, what is the HP Care Pack?

Is it just a warranty thing untill April 2013?

For the 3 of my laptops that I have equipped with SSDs I use the recovered HDD in an external open enclosure. I keep the original OS installation and the recovery partition on it (just in case) but use the rest of the space for storage - mainly imaging.

Two of these laptops never leave the house so transporting data is not a problem. For the one that I take 'on the road', I have an extra 32GB stick (for $25) for data because the SSD is only 90GB.

Since the warranty deadline is so near, I would say call them as soon as you can. Your email could have been deleted by some clerk and you will be "out of luck".

They've still not replied, I will ring them.

I've just got home from work and it's 5:55pm here now, I'm guessing the call centers will be closed now? (office hours) And I'm going to have to wait untill Monday before I can phone them now?

Try their technical support, despite the time of day. It can't hurt.

Phoned them this morning, told them the error ID etc and they are sending out a new hard drive and recovery disks, bish bash bosh.

I'm guessing I just install the new hard drive, the stick in the recovery disk and follow the on screen wizards/ instructions..?

Hopefully that will sort out my Laptop, thank you for all the help on these forums.
