BD ROM drive only plays DVDs -- No Cds Have an Asus laptop K70IC with a Slimtype DS4E1S SCSI CD Rom device. Problem is, it only recognizes and plays DVDs and Blue Ray, No factory Muisc CDs. It used to play CDs but sometime recently it stopped. Says does not detect a disc, insert a disc, but trying various discs, no CDs recognized or play. I downloaded and installed the newest firmware from Asus, but still the same.
As the DVDs play, it seems like a software issue has occured (but not sure). Have begun uninstalling CD/DVD software but so far haven't hit upon a solution.
Any suggestions, ideas? | My System Specs |

You might have to pay through the nose for it, but I'd either take it to a shop or something, see if they could figure it out if you're not able to from Sevenforums. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom OS Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. have you installed any new software just before the issue started?
I think you will find it is a software problem.
open system restore and each saved restore point will show what was installed
if anything and if you find software you installed then make note of it and close
system restore and remove the suspected software.

tested I have not solved the problem but have found that other Program CDs also play but still no music CDs. All DVDs still play. Have uninstalled disc player software but no change and have now installed new codec pack from K-Lite, still the same. Win 7 codec, still the same. When I insert a music CD, I hear the first sounds of it loading and then it stops. Given that it plays every disc but music still makes me think it is software related. Anyone have any further ideas. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K701C OS win 7 prem CPU duo 700 Motherboard Asus Memory 4gb Graphics Card 1gb Monitor(s) Displays 17 vga Hard Drives 320 gb |

Dear garsar,
How old is the BD/CD-ROM Drive? you can try troubleshooting by,
1) Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by clicking the START button.
2) Click open the Control Panel.
3) In the Search box of the Control Panel, type troubleshooter.
4) Click on troubleshooting.
5) Under Hardware and Sound, click configure a Device. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Sony Vaio C series VPCCB35FN laptop OS MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1 CPU IntelCore i5@2.40GHz; Sandy Bridge 32nm Tech. So far have not found a solution to this. I have uninstalled anything to do with audio playback including Windows media center, and the BD ROM drive.
It still plays all DVD and Blue Ray, all original program discs as well. It does NOT play factory audio CD discs or home made backup program discs.
I am suspicious of something to do with DRM management. However I am not sure where to find anything to do with DRM.
In particular within the registry where I think something was changed/added/corrupted to do with DRM.
When I put a music cd in the drive, I hear the beginning sound of it loading but it suddenly stops, which is why I think that when it recognizes the disc it stops loading due to DRM. I can't be sure but I wonder.
Any suggestions on how to check this issue. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K701C OS win 7 prem CPU duo 700 Motherboard Asus Memory 4gb Graphics Card 1gb Monitor(s) Displays 17 vga Hard Drives 320 gb |

My latest update is the following:
Used Windows Restore to a much earlier date when things worked, and still no change.
I remembered that I had a portable DVD/CD player and plugged it in and tested all format discs and all played fine.
I assume, but correct me if I am wrong, that the portable player is using the same software that is in the computer and therefore, given the fact that it played everything, it now looks like the drive itself in the computer is somehow broken and won't play CDs.
This is, of course incredibly odd, as it will recognize some of my original factory program discs. No muisc and no CD-R or CD-RW.
I have no other ideas. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Asus K701C OS win 7 prem CPU duo 700 Motherboard Asus Memory 4gb Graphics Card 1gb Monitor(s) Displays 17 vga Hard Drives 320 gb BD ROM drive only plays DVDs -- No Cds problems?
