possible corrupted hard drive, please advise!

hey, I lent an external hard drive to a friend for a few days, when I got it back, I plugged it in and a windows message popped up and said the file system is corrupted, would I like it repaired... I clicked yes and let it do its thing, but it only got to 99% and then froze.

All the files and folders on the drive seemed to be in order but when I copied a couple of videos over to my PC (mkv or avi) to watch them I found that they are slightly broken, with chunks of data missing throughout them so VLC will just through up rubbish or freeze the picture frequently throughout the video.

please let me know if there are any diagnostic or tools that I can run to find out the problem and possibly repair the files if possible. fingers crossed!

You could run a disk check on it - Disk Check

I had a similar experience once when someone accidently dropped my external drive from a height of one metre. Please check on this.

Taking it out of its enclosure and running it through SATA(?) would bypass a possible enclosure issue I'd say, if that's the case. . . don't know if it is, though.
