USB 3.0 Extenal Drive keep dropping Hi,
I saw so many problems about USB 3.0, I am not sure if this is a new one.
I have install a 3.5" harddisk on a USB 3.0 external casing, when I plug it into the USB 3.0 port, it come up a while (like 30 seconds) then disappear, and never to be seen again. If plug into a USB 2.0 post the same thing happen. The following are my PC configuration:
Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1
Asus P7P55D-E Pro
BOIS version: 1602
USB 2.0 : Intel 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset, Driver version: 9.1.1.1020
USB 3.0 : Renesas Electroincs USB 3.0 Host Controller, Driver version: 2.1.28.0, FW: 3025
External casing is HUR1-SU3S2 with single WD20EARX harddisk.
In the begining, I thought it is the problem of the external casing, but when I tested in a laptop running Windows 7, it is working fine on a USB 2.0 port.
Help someone can help me on this problem.
Thanks in advance.

Could be the chipset inside the external enclosure causing the problem.
What brand and model number of the enclosure would help determine if that is the problem.
EDIT: OK, tracked the enclosure down. It is a RAID enclosure but can be setup for a single drive. I would image that you should have a way to set it up with the included software for non-raid.
Just my thoughts on what the problem might be. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number My Build OS win7 Ult 64 CPU i7 3930K & 3960X Motherboard ASUS P9X79 Deluxe Memory 16GB G-Skill 2133MHz Graphics Card Sapphire HD 7970 Sound Card On-board Monitor(s) Displays ASUS 27 inch Screen Resolution 1920X1080 Keyboard Mionix Mouse Mionix PSU Corsair AX1200 Case NZXT 810 Cooling Custom Loop, Swiftech HDBlock Hard Drives Crucial M4 256GB, 1.5TB WD Black for Data/Images Internet Speed Cable |

Hi,
I have done that with single disk, non-raid, it is not work on the Asus board, but it is working on a notebook Windows 7 x64 on a USB 2 port. I have also change another external casing, USB 3.0, single disk casing, same problem, but works on the notebook Windows 7 x64. I guess it is the Renesas driver on the Windows 7 x64. I had also installed the latest driver, but no luck to get it to work.
Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, did you add a PCIe x1 USB 3.0 adapter card to your machine, or did it come pre-installed?
I added one (from Transcend, but it's really Renesas) into both of my machines (which both write to an external Verbatim USB 2.0/3.0 drive... which is actually a Samsung SATA drive in the external USB enclosure) and have no problems (although I am using an older Renesas driver 2.0.32.0 which came on a little CD with the card. No problem whatsoever on either machine.
Now for sure you have to connect external power to the card (via Molex plug) as the PCIe bus does not provide the power required to drive the USB 3.0 connection. Do you have external power going to your USB 3.0 adapter card? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home-built, two systems (1) and (2) OS Windows 7 Pro x64 (1), Win7 Pro X64 / WinXP Pro x86 on (2) CPU i5-3350p 3.1Ghz/6MB-cache (1); E8400 3.0Ghz/6MB-cache (2) Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V Pro (1); ASUS P5Q3 (2) Memory 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (1); 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3 (2) Graphics Card ATI HD5770 dual-DVI (1), (see TV cards); ATI HD4850 (2) Sound Card Realtek ALC892 HD Audio (1); Realtek ALC1200 HD Audio (2) Monitor(s) Displays Eizo HD2441W LCD, Eizo S2433W (1); Eizo 24" S2433W (2) Screen Resolution 1920x1200, 1920x1200 (1); 1920x1200 (2) Keyboard IBM PS/2 (1) and (2) Mouse Logitech MX Revolution wireless (1); Microsoft wired (2) PSU Nesteq ECS-6001 600W (1); Nesteq ECS-5001 500W (2) Case Acousti-Case 360 (1) and (2) Cooling Noctua NH-U12P SE2 for CPU, 2x120mm case fans (1) and (2) Hard Drives (1) 1TB SATA-II (7200RPM), 2TB SATA-II (7200RPM), 2TB SATA-III (7200RPM), 250GB SATA-III (10000RPM) for OS;

Doing a little searching...
Looks like there might be a firmware upgrade to address this problem. But I don't know if the affected hardware is what you have. RE: USB 3.0 Extenal Drive keep dropping Hi,
Thanks for the reply. The MB came with 2 USB 3.0 port, NEC Chipset (from the website), it is not working so I bought another PCIe USB 3.0 card, thinking it might use another chipset, it end up the same. So both of them are not working.
Question:
Is there any other PCIe USB 3.0 card out there not using NEC chipset? I just go to get one and solve my problem, please help.
Thanks.

RE: USB 3.0 Extenal Drive keep dropping Hi,
The firmware is already in 3025. Thanks.

But it still seems to be a Renesas product, and as I said uses an older driver version from December 2010. Never did any firmware upgrade, and checking for newer drivers says I have the most current for the card. I have no complaints.
Works perfectly for me, in both machines. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home-built, two systems (1) and (2) OS Windows 7 Pro x64 (1), Win7 Pro X64 / WinXP Pro x86 on (2) CPU i5-3350p 3.1Ghz/6MB-cache (1); E8400 3.0Ghz/6MB-cache (2) Motherboard ASUS P8Z77-V Pro (1); ASUS P5Q3 (2) Memory 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (1); 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3 (2) Graphics Card ATI HD5770 dual-DVI (1), (see TV cards); ATI HD4850 (2) Sound Card Realtek ALC892 HD Audio (1); Realtek ALC1200 HD Audio (2) Monitor(s) Displays Eizo HD2441W LCD, Eizo S2433W (1); Eizo 24" S2433W (2) Screen Resolution 1920x1200, 1920x1200 (1); 1920x1200 (2) Keyboard IBM PS/2 (1) and (2) Mouse Logitech MX Revolution wireless (1); Microsoft wired (2) PSU Nesteq ECS-6001 600W (1); Nesteq ECS-5001 500W (2) Case Acousti-Case 360 (1) and (2) Cooling Noctua NH-U12P SE2 for CPU, 2x120mm case fans (1) and (2) Hard Drives (1) 1TB SATA-II (7200RPM), 2TB SATA-II (7200RPM), 2TB SATA-III (7200RPM), 250GB SATA-III (10000RPM) for OS;
