What does Asus cpu "core unlocker" actually do ?

I have an Asus system with a AMD Athlon II x4 620 CPU. At system startup there is an option to "Press 4 for Asus core unlocker" ?

What does this do and is there any drawback or advantage to "unlocking" the AMD 4 core CPU

    Mobo: ASUS M4A785-M BIOS: 0906 - 4/14/2010 CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 620 RAM: OCZ2P10664GK Vid: EVGA 9500GT w/1GB on-board PSU: Antec Earthwatt 650 watt HDD: Hatachi 750 GB Sata 32mb 7200rpm OS: Win 7 Pro 64bit

    Thanks....TRinAZ

if you have the ability to unlock the cores it is just going to give a extra boost

If your cpu can handle the changes you could do so If you don't know how to use it or what it really does i would suggest reading about your cpu and Mb

Knowing these things is very valuable this will make or break what you are doing

you could easily mess things up if the anthlon can't handle the core unlock the cores are locked for a reason /One it could be the chip couldn't handle load on 3 to 4 cores at once which they locked the 2 cores because they are bad

Alot of things can happen when unlocking extra cores it could be a good or bad if you know what i mean some people have good luck some people have awfull stability

Do some searching and reading even consult someone besides here in real time with some knowledge on Bios unlocking

If you are hestitant you can always see what would be a better upgrade cpu and go that route instead of messing with things that can actually be fatal then helpfull

Asus refines AMD core unlocking | bit-tech.net

I'd read that some of the 3 core CPUs were made as 4 core processors, but that one was disabled. I hadn't heard that some of the dual core processors had 2 disabled; that's wild.

The Asus utility allows you to enable them.

    Feeling lucky?
