    Cannot access any optical drives

    Suddenly have lost access to my two internal drives (Blu Ray writer & DVD/CD) as well as an external USB connected HP dvd writer.

    Device Manager reports:

    Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

    Attempts to re-load driver unsuccessful - msg states the installed drivers are the latest.

    Welcome to the forums . :)

    Try a System Restore to an earlier day than the problem started.

    Let us informed what happened .

    Many thanks for the suggestion. It took two tries, but I eventually went back far enough to resolve the problem. I'm fearful of it recurring after WIN 7 re-installs a bunch of service updates and fixes.
    btw - Firefox kept crashing after the restore - I had to re-install.
    Cheers

    AAAARRGGGHHHHH!!
    Just as I suspected. Upon powering down, WIN 7 automatically installed a batch of 25 updates. Now I'm back where I started - getting the same diagnostic:

    Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

    Should I wait for a future WIN 7 update to rectify this bug?
    Incidentally, my second WIN 7 computer (laptop) does not have this problem.

    Open device manager>right click the optical drives>properties>navigate to drivers tab>rollback driver.

    If that doesn't work, right click the drive and select uninstall for both drives.
    Then Action>scan for hardware changes.

    See if any of these gives back you access to them.

    Negative.
    The rollback driver option was not actionable (perhaps no back-level drivers were available)
    Uninstall and scan for hardware changes brought the devices back with the same symptom.
    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Budsio, Uninstall all the windows updates you received and install them 1x1 until you find the culprit which was causing the problem

    Also, for the time being, change windows updates to 'Download but not automatically install' or 'Notify only and not download or install' so to prevent the conflicting update from installing again.
    Later we can mark that update as hidden and restore your update settings.

    Here's a thought.
    Start the Run Command Prompt
    Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok
    Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ system\current control set\control\class
    find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    so it's this key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Then delete the upper and lower filters....

    Reboot, those filters will be put back by the system, you won't feel a thing.
    This can often sort this problem out.
