USB optical mouse disconnects, is not recognized

(Using Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, SP1, with all recommended Windows Updates installed; 4 GB RAM; ~150 GB of free HD space.)

My HP-manufactured USB optical mouse that came with my 2-year-old PC (an all-in-one) hangs frequently for a second or so (like after every other mouse click), and becomes disconnected and unrecognized about every 30 minutes during a session. Here is a link to a screenshot of the pop-up message I get: 72de4e1ad441e7a258691e97cd74e7f0.png . Of course I can't click on the message for assistance as advised, since the mouse doesn't work.

The only way to get the mouse to work again is to unplug it from the USB port (on the PC -- no adapters or extenders involved) and plug it in again, then the driver gets reinstalled and the mouse works again until the next time. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling and searching for an updated driver but Device Manager always tells me my current driver is the best available. HP doesn't offer any drivers for this mouse. I've tried switching with the same brand/type mouse from another HP PC, but the symptoms are always the same.

I've Googled and found many other cases with the same type of problem, but no answers that work in my case. I thought I had this solved a few months ago, but it has returned and is as bad as ever.

My PC is working fine otherwise and is as responsive as I could want in all other respects. I've used Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware which found no problems other than cookies. I've run chkdsk /f /r which found no problems.

Any other suggestions? Thanks!
