The standard recommendation here is Microsoft Security Essentials (a free download from MS) for viruses generally and then possibly something like Malwarebytes for malware specifically.

Malwarebytes has free and paid versions. The free version works on demand. The paid version is always working (real-time). I'm not sure, but you can probably use either free or paid alongside McAfee. Malwarebytes is highly regarded.

If I recall correctly, Kapersky, Avast, and the latest versions of Norton are pretty well thought of too.

But Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the most common choice here.

Some would argue that Mcafee is a virus because it hooks into your system and is difficult to full remove. MSE is a very common, popular choice, and it's tough to beat the cost: free. It is possible you could get a refund if you return Mcafee, but you would probably want to call the store first.

yeah, I was thinking of that, I'll try uninstalling it and asking for a refund. In the mean time, I'll have a look at the programs that you have suggested.

Thanks again,
Connor

If you want to uninstall McAfee, you had best use the special tool they provide. You can get it here at Kapersky

How to remove McAfee products?

Even then, I have heard of people having difficulties getting rid of it.

Do you have a restore point available to a time prior to installing McAfee?

yeah, I think, should I restore to this point in order to remove it fully?

If that System Restore point is definitely to a point in time prior to installing McAfee, that would be my preferred method of getting rid of it----if that is what you want to do.

I wouldn't use McAfee if it were free.

Okay, I'll give that a go, and I'll probably install MSE and Malwarebytes if it works.
