high pitched nasty sounding noise coming from laptop

I was over at a friends tonight and she has an hp I5 laptop...not sure of the model# and it is getting a high pitch noise that can be heard from as far as about 6 feet away. This is a consistant and steady noise. This just started today. It is running hotter than normal from what she said. The laptop is about 2 yrs old.

I checked one of the fans and I felt some air coming out, and I could hear the fan running, but I had a hard time identifying where the noise is coming from...

What components would most likely be the cause. Certainly the fan, I would think, but what else could it be? I won't risk opening up the case, but is there any additional troubleshooting I should try?

Sounds like a bad fan, higher heat and squealing sound. also check to see if a disk has been left in the optical drive.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll have her check the optical drive, but I don't think anything is in there. I guess she may need to take it in for repair. If it was mine, I would open up the case and repair it myself, but I don't want to risk messing anything up on her machine. Thanks for your suggestion- Carl

You're welcome Carl. I'd be hesitant to open a laptop myself, can be tricky. hope she finds a solution.

It's The Hard Drive Making High Pitch Noise

I am a professional Technician and have encountered high pitch noise many times. I've tried it all, change processor, change memory, fans, heat sink you name it. By accident I took a hard drive out of one laptop because of high pitch noise (Tested Perfectly 100% performance and health) put in another laptop and boom same high pitch noise. Same scenario with HP Desktop. It's the hard drive! Yay
