USB to SATA Adaptor does not detect drive

I recently purchased one of these ORICO External Hard Drive Enclosure, USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, for 3.5" SATA HDD and SSD (3588US3)-Newegg.com

It work well and I recommended it to a friend and he bought one to recover data from an old hard drive. He could not get it to work, so he asked me to look at it. When I install his drive directly into a computer I am able to read the drive without any problem. However, I cannot see the drive when I connect it to the USB adapter. I know the adapter is working because I've checked it with another drive.

When connected to the USB adapter, the drive does not show up in computer-management.

    Any suggestions?

The only reason I could think of is that the plug and play external enclosure is unable to supply enough power to that old HDD. ( Old HDDs may draw more power than the current breed of new HDDs)

Seems to make sense. When I leave the drive in the USB adapter it gets very hot. After it got so hot, I reconnected in the conventional way and the computer gave me an error on trying to start. I let the drive cool down and the computer and drive worked normally.
