Canon MP620 problem, not showing up at all

I'm trying to fix my friend's printer problem. He's got a Canon PIXMA MP620 and we're trying to get it to connect to his Windows 7 laptop. I was under the impression that this was a simple job but its a nightmare. Basically, I started off with no trace of Canon in the laptop. Then, using the setup disc, I followed all the instructions up to actually connecting the printer to the laptop. Now I am trying everything I can think of to forge some kind of connection between the laptop and the printer but nothing is working. When I use a USB cable between them, the laptop does nothing: no 'New Hardware detected' messages, no safely remove icon in the tray, no trace at all of a printer or USB connected to the laptop appears. I've used two new USB cables as well so it's not them. I wanted to get the wireless to work but that's just the same, the wireless LAN is on I've triple checked everything but there is just no trace of a printer. Can anybody help me here?

Everything you need for your Canon PIXMA is contained in this link: PIXMA MP620

It does sound very much as though the problem is driver-related and it's quite possible the driver disc is not a Windows 7 one.

You could also download and install your drivers etc. first, and then try adding your printer in Start>Devices & Printers>Add a Printer.

Have a look in Device Manager to see if your printer is detected there and if you're not sure whether your printer driver has installed, you can check under Uninstall a Program in your control panel.
