It seems to just not wanna work with 7. I think even if I could install Win7 on another PC it wouldn't work with the USB. What's strange is the USB at the front seems fine with everything but Win7.

The idea was nice. As the plan was not to spend much money. But buying parts etc isn't worth it imo. The case isn't anything special, none of it is anything special. The idea was just to be a cheap upgrade from the 10+yr old system that's currently being used.

Out of curiosity, what is a Linux Lunchbox?

EDIT: Also... Is there any way for me to get abck to the XP install I had previously. It did say it would be saving the files in "windows.old"

The "Linux lunch box" part was mostly a pun there! This is the kind of case you can beat on for things like ocing, trying out other OSs, etc. while not being one easy to restore but toy with until it finally gives out on you.

While you are trying to replace a 10yr. old case with something newer you wouldn't want to pass along something loaded up with existing and potential headaches which wouldn't last either. The supply or drives either one could fail next week leaving you with nothing working.

The idea of looking for a used case in good working order or a low cost new build would be something offered for consideration over not having anything. Granted you wanted to get this one working while it seems the problems will only be growing on you.

The likely reason the front ports generally work is that many use to have problems with the additional front ports while the rear ports being the mains were always reliable. I used to hear those complaints frequently where people ended up avoiding them entirely at times.

The other thing about any OEM system that old is no chipset and other hardware drivers being available for 7! With premade systems the model series changed faster then the next version of Windows where no newer version of drivers were ever written for the onboard controllers!

Without at least some Vista drivers you won't have any that will work with 7 on which is another concern about why things are not working out for 7. Surprisingly however I did run a temp install of the 32bit 7 on an old XP custom build however where all XP drivers went right on and worked for a 128mb video card, chipset, onboard sound, etc.!

With an old Packard Bell? that would be a shot in the dark. And like you were saying and realizing investing in replacement parts wouldn't be worth it. This is why many get into custom building where they can swap out individual parts one at a time rather then buying everything new all over from scratch in order to save on costs! Plus the updated hardwares readily see support from manufacturers as far as updates since they are still in business.

As for the Windows.old folder that mainly preserves all of the user accounts and files, folders there you can back up before seeing that gone for good using the disk cleanup option or manually deleting it. But reverting back to XP might only help somewhat by being able to locate original drivers and updates at a few sites that still keep them archived.

Ah I see, just a machine to play around with.

I'v booted into a boot CD and I can view the file system. I guess getting back to the XP MCE wouldn't be as simple as renaming the .old and deleting the Win7 stuff?

I wasn't given the XP MCE disc so just wondering if there's any way back to it now? Cause at the moment it just boots the the Win7 "setup is preparing your computer for first use" and I cant do anything there.

EDIT: Oh and in case you're interested the motherboard is a MS-7301 VER:1

I may have a look on ebay etc for one just in case.

Unfortunately you would need the XP MCE disk or borrow another long enough for a clean install after a drive wipe of the newer version since it is too new to rollback. 7 is two versions newer not allowing any rollback to the immediate previous version(Vista) generally seen when first going to install over the previous.

As long as the OEM sticker with product key is still on the machine you could another of the same edition to simply put a clean install on. It's likely many of the driver sets won't work on 7 but could be tried on the 32bit for a test. Why not? You seem to have an old pc to play with not going anywhere quite yet!

They may work and help out a little but don't plan on much. The site there has usb driver sets which seem to be where the problem is for 7. They won't help any with the rear ports but as far as the OS problems 7 seems to have a much better backward compatibility.

You lost me a little there, with the stuff about sites and driver sets.

It was working originally on XP MCE, just wondering if there's a way back to it as I haven't gone all the way to 7. And the windows.old stuff is all sstill on the drive.

I know a clean install of XP would be an option if I had a disc. Just wondering if i can use the windows.old folder to get it booting back to Windows XP?

EDIT: £36 for a new motherboard. Seller has sold 10 and has 10 left. Not sure if im allowed to link to ebay.

Tempting. As it would be cheaper than a lot of other options. And would no doubt solve the issues with the ports at the back. Whether or not it would work with Win 7 I don't know.

The contents in the Windows.old folder can be restored but not the version of Windows itself. You can look the information over in the guide for that. Windows.old folder - Restore into a new installation

To get XP on like I was saying before the only time to revert back to XP or Vista was right during the initial start of the 7 install where the option presents itself in order to roll back to the previous version. Otherwise clean install time required.

As far as getting any Packard Bell updates for anything at this late date you might as well as say: "forget it!" while some sites still carry them. They know people are still running some of the old PB models and keep the drivers available. They are still available at the site there for download.

    Aw Packard Bell's site?

So when the contents are restored it's only personal files etc, it wouldn't restore the drivers etc?

Not sure exactly where to go with it now. I'm thinking trying to get my hands on an XP disc I guess. I do think even with the issues I'm aware of, this would be a step up. And then if something does go later, I doubt my gran would want to go back to the 10+yr old one due to the speed difference. And would then prob buy one for herself. But even if this one gives her 1-2 yrs, that would be gd.

Well you can try downloading the driver sets for each button on the page there and try installing each set one at a time to see if they will work with 7. By the way is that a laptop?

It wouldn't be a supply but battery or ac adapter besides the drive that could go and no way to replace the ac adapter with an original but substitution could be possible if and only if the voltage/current charging, amperage is compatible with the original. The specifications for that would have to meet the Packard Bell standard however in order to work.

You certainly wouldn't want to cook a battery using the wrong adapter when charging! Different manufacturers may be using a higher amperage with their own models for quick charging purposes on newer portables.

As far as both hardwares and the OS you will want everything in working order however. For someone still running a 10yr. old pc they would be a novice user and not able to diagnose and troubleshoot on their own.

As far as buying a new laptop you can find some small screen lower end cpu models in a Walmart for about $300 or just over. Usually a 13" display. Newegg carries the 15-17" display models for about $400+ when going to look at some new ones unless planning to replace with a desktop model.

It's a desktop PC. Here a google image of the motherboard. Google Image Result for http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTYwWDEyODA%3D/%24(KGrHqF,!qEE63Z2e1KSBPCuwnIVWw~~60_35.JPG

So you're saying install the drivers manually to get it to work with Win 7?

How do I do that in it's current state? With no mouse and keyboard? Or could I do that while in the file system that I can access via a boot CD? It would only really be motherboard/usb related drivers that would need installed right? To get the K+M working.

I wasn't sure if it was since that model number came across the listings for drivers and memory upgrades for a laptop model. I may have to update the link there after a look at the details and full model information for the desktop you have to see if the same site has a different page. This was one thing to verify however on this.

I updated the link I posted earlier with another site carrying the MSI drivers. The PB support page is still up as well just not for the US. Support Download

The problem there was not finding any results for that model and board from being too old at this late date. I see you found a replacement board at least. The MSI support site didn't come up with anything for that model board however.

Without any working input devices since you can still navigate using a keyboard when a mouse isn't working for many things you would be in tight spot! But seeing the driver sets installed might just get this all cleared up for you as long as the drivers for the older Windows will work on 7. At that model board did see Vista x86 updates which will also help.
