Windows 7: Cannot read hdd from old desktop Win7 32bit on new laptop Win7 64bit

I have a new Toshiba Laptop (Windows 7 64bit CORE i3). I would like to run (via usb) and old hdd from my desktop which was 32bit Windows 7.
I have the old hard drive in a SATA enclosure and running it via USB to my laptop. When I attempt to either copy or read the old hard drive I get a write protect error. I have tried
the MS registry changes to remove "write protection" but the registry entry they call for is non existent in my laptop registry.
My last post on this was annotated as solved...but my explanation was weak. I do not want to run this drive as a permanent addition to my system, I just need to copy some files from the old drive to the new one.
If I attempt to use Control Panel/Disk Management it tells me the old drive is not "initialized". Both options to initialize don't work. Please help I have some very important medical records that must be copied from old hdd to new.

Have you tried connecting the old hard drive to the old computer using the SATA connection then connecting your laptop to your network before copying the files over?

Essentially, my solution is the same as SeaVixen's,

Stick the old drive back in the desktop.
Copy the files dear to your heart to a usb stick or a usb drive.
After you finish getting off everything you want, then on the old system:
Make a system repair disc.
Boot up from the system repair disk
Use DiskPart to clean the old disk. Be sure to use the Clean All command.

Thanks for the responses....SeaVixen & KarlsNooks, unfortunately like a dummy I disposed of the old desktop, with the exception of the RAM and hard drives. I was wondering if I USB'd the hdd to my friends 32bit pc would I be able to remove the write protection that way? Also would the removal of the write protection also allow me to transfer those files, by plugging in to my 64bit laptop after write protection is removed?

Boot up from a Linux disk such as puppylinux.

Can you see the files now?
