Essentially, my solution is the same as SeaVixen's,
Stick the old drive back in the desktop.
Copy the files dear to your heart to a usb stick or a usb drive.
After you finish getting off everything you want, then on the old system:
Make a system repair disc.
Boot up from the system repair disk
Use DiskPart to clean the old disk. Be sure to use the Clean All command.
