How to identify an unknown device

    Here is a vague question.

On start up my comp has started to detect an 'unknown device'. It attempts and fails to load drivers for this.

I have scanned for hardware changes but the only item found is a Microsoft keyboard with fingerprint reader which I have had forever and has never worked under W7.

Is there any way to determine what this unknown device is? Sadly I do not remember when it started appearing.

    Hello Rally,

I hope this helps. It will show you how to find lookup the HID = Hardware ID, PID = Product ID, VID = Vendor ID of the unknown device to help see what it may be.

    Brilliant. Thanks, Brink.

Using the tutorial I ascertained that my system had lost the driver for my USB3.0 Bluetooth dongle.

Removed dongle. Restarted. Shut down. Replaced dongle. Started up again. Driver installed. One happy pc user (me).

    Rep added for Brink.
