Recovering data with a Vantec USB adaptor through Win7

I am trying to recover data from a Toshiba serial ATA disk drive that used to be in my Dell Inspiron laptop, running Windows Vista.

I'm using the Vantec SATA/IDE to USB Adaptor, connected to my current ASUS laptop running Windows 7.

The problem is all my files and folder from my old hard drive are not showing up. I can see many other folders on the old harddrive, ie. program folders, so I don't think the harddrive is corrupted.

My Dell Inspiron laptop had a Windows password on startup, so is this why I cannot get my files this way? If so, is there anyway to access them with the Vantec adapter?
