Notebook reboots when choosing Start > Shutdown

    G'day,

I'm setting up a brand new ASUS A54C Notebook for a friend, and am having some trouble : each time I choose to Shutdown the notebook, either when logged in using Start > Shutdown, or from the login screen, the notebook does the following:

    - logs off user as normal
    - shuts down notebook as normal
    - after about 3 secs, automatically reboots the notebook to the login screen

The system specifications are as follows:

    - Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium x64 OEM
    - Intel Pentium CPU B960 @2.2GHz
    - 4GB RAM
    - Single 300GB HDD (1 x 25GB recovery partition; 1 x 125GB OS partition; 1 x 150GB empty data partition)

Thinking we may have a bum OEM installation causing the problematic shut down, I did a sfc /scannow which returned corruptions that cannot be fixed. I burn't the recovery disks, then did a fresh install from those recovery disks, but I still have sfc/ scannow reporting integrity violations that cannot be fixed (I have run sfc 3 x with a reboot between each).

Can someone suggest anything I can try to fix this? The goal is simply to have the notebook shutdown as normal, when selecting Start > Shutdown.

Other than this, there is absolutely no problem with the hardware or behaviour of the OS. Perhaps I am better off installing a crap-free Home Premium from an ISO, and then activating with COA sticker on bottom of laptop?

    Hey Golden
One of the more common reasons for this behavior is a device driver causing the system to crash on shutdown.

Is the "Automatically Restart on system failure" option still checked in the system properties > Advanced?

    Thanks for the reply mate.

I can't tell anymore as I went for a clean crap-ware free install Once its updated the 77 updates, I'll try a shutdown and see what happens. If it repeats, I'll check that setting.

That is usually the best option. I do it with new laptops as a matter of course. Some of that bloatware can certainly mess with the system!

    Hope it solves it.

    OK.

I unchecked the "Automatically Restart on system failure" setting, but the problem still persisted. Then I happended to stumble across this in the FAQ:

K54C cannot be shut down normally in AC mode, which will restart automatically after shutdown. But it is normal in DC mode.

The solution apparently is to upgrade BIOS to version 207 (currently 204). Located and tried to install the Windows Flash Utility only to get this message:

WinFlash can only be installed on ASUS Notebook!
WTF! OK, tossed out flashing from Windows directly and dived into BIOS and started EzyFlash, updated BIOS from 204 to 207......and voila! Problem solved! :)

A case of a BIOS upgrade being neccessary and solving the problem. Case closed.

Who ever heard of unplugging the laptop to shut it off..

Glad I came across this thread I was starting to go mad trying to figure out why my Asus X54C laptop would not turn off. I have literally worked on hundreds of laptops over the years and had never seen one where you had to unplug it to shut it off from Windows. I'll try the bios update later...

    Thanks......
