Work-arounds for Win 7 (starter) dual monitor restrictions

Hi everyone, new to the forum here.

I have a net book and as much I like the small size of a net book, they aren't too fun to work on for long periods of time at home.

I want to get an external monitor to hook-up to my net book (~23 inch). I am able to clone what is shown on my net book at a friends place but I want to have separate things on each monitor (i.e. text book on the external while MS WORD on my net book screen).

I have done a bit of research myself and understand that Windows 7 Starter can only clone what is shown on my net book and does not support the function I want.

Is there a word-around for this problem? I can't justify upgrading Windows on a net book (plus money is an issue) and I do not want to change OS to Linux etc.

I have tried 'DisplayFusion' and UltraMon' but still haven't had any luck (not sure if I was using them correctly).

Lastly just a bit about my net book, I have a Toshiba NB550D. C-50 AMD 1GHz dual core fusion processor (?), 2Gb RAM, screen res 1024x600, integrated Radeon HD6250M and HDMI input.

Sorry about the long rant, figured more information would help.

Thanks in advance
