Windows 7: Reformatting 2nd HDD (WD1002FAEX)

Reformatting 2nd HDD (WD1002FAEX)

I'm having issues preparing this HDD for new O/S, i want to delete all partitions then create at 200gb for o/s + games + apps etc, 800gb for storage.

Computer management shows 2 partitions of 80.42gb & 851.09gb.
Both are unallocated.
It doesn't give me the option to delete 1st or 2nd partition
I've somehow made it dynamic (don't really know what this is).
It will not let me change it to basic - error says can't be completed cos disk isn't empty.
As far as i can tell it's empty o.O
When i go into DiskPart (in cmd) it only shows 1 partition.

So i'm reasonably confused as to what to do.
Even if I can just get back to one partition i'd be happy!

(i tried to install indows 7 on it but get an error when i try to do fresh install)

Many thanks in advance!

Hello Sirius0005 Welcome to SF!

First off the DiskPart tool is showing one unformatted partition on the drive while the Disk Management tool is showing two spaces according to the Partition Table information. And you certainly Do Not want any Dynamic volume in any way!

Since you are already familiar with the DiskPart it will be easy to say: "run the clean command once you have selected the correct Disk #!" using the List Disk command to see which it is. Disk 0? Disk 1? Disk 2? if you have more then one drive present. With only one HD simply type the "clean all" command.

Once the present volumes are removed with a drive then made "raw" you can opt for something other then the Disk Management tool to see more then one partition(Basic volumes no less) created on the Sata III model you have. You can create separate partitions with the DiskPart tool but have to get the bytes number correct as far as size for each of the two partitions you have planned.

Rather then the DM or command prompt approach the next step is simply to opt for a 3rd party option like Paragon, Partition Magic, GParted live, or other partitioning program having a main gui to work with to prep the drive for a clean install of 7.

Hi Night Hawk,

Wow you made it all so easy!
I went into cmd, selected disk 1 - cleaned the disk, then used Partition Wizard Home to do the rest.
Now on to installing the os

Thank you kindly for your help!
