Your friend has no clue as to what it could be? Maybe he just used the same password as he used for logon.
Removing the cmos battery in a laptop will not reset the BIOS password. They use different chips to store that data than what you find in a desktop PC. You won't find a reset jumper either. It's done on purpose so that the password can't be easily bypassed if the laptop is lost or stolen. There are backdoor or master passwords that the manufacturer knows. You have to prove ownership before they will help you bypass it. If you Google the right term you might get lucky and find a way in. I can't say much more without violating forum rules.
the bios did get reset, and does have "pins" on the board to do so. Even with proof of ownership and Toshiba knowing the bios issue and having a fix, when the warranty is up-it cost money. i shorted the pins and got it done-but doing that also can blow out the USB ports, due to the fact that the battery has to be in the laptop and you have to power it up. so, tell all ur friends to keep any and all things updated on their computers.
now updating the bios to the fix shall be a good time (no USB ports) this laptop will be relegated to web surfing only, but that's what he wanted.
