Mouse not working on desktop icons

I am new to this forum but have seen this issue before with answers that do not solve the problem. On a new start or reboot the mouse works on the desktop icons for a few minutes and then stops working; ie, it doesn't highlight or open any desktop icons.

I have tried a different mouse and the issue remains, so it is a software or system problem. I have windows 7 64 bit on an HP desktop with loads of hard drive and memory. Any suggestions?

    Welcome aboard :)
Some more info about the mouse ? Is it PS2 or USB or wireless ?

It fails to work properly only on the desktop ? The behavior is right in Start menu and explorer ?

Let us know those facts too.

Mouse is USB type. Yes, it fails to work properly only on the desktop. It performs normally everywhere else.

Asking one more thing ... if you boot in Safe Mode , does it work properly or not ?

Thanks, ARC, for your interest in my problem.

I rebooted in Safe Mode and left the desktop icons on for over an hour before doing anything with the mouse. (In normal mode it takes a few minutes before the mouse malfunctions, so I gave it time.) After this elapsed time the mouse functioned normally.

I have this issue on a new laptop. The technical team have advised me to reload the OS. This is a very last resort, not sure it will effectively resolve the issue as it seems to be common enough.

I agree this is a last resort for a simple inconvenience. I will revisit Safe Mode to see what programs are not loaded for possible clues of where to look next
