Windows 7 Dual Monitor Problems Please Help!

I am currently using an external monitor, it is an HD cinema display for Apple computers that is hooked from a DVI to HDMI and then into my laptop. I am using an Asus laptop with Windows 7. My dual monitors have been working fine recently until i installed this 64 bit epson scanner software. When i went to scan a photo with the software both my monitors flickered and then my external monitor was the only one detected and went to the lowest resolution possible at the ratio of my laptop. Now its either my laptop is the only screen detected or my monitor is the only screen detected, depending on if the external monitor is plugged in or not. But the screen resolution stays at the ratio of the laptop and it is not recognizing the external display. Any ideas what this could be?
