Laptop doesnt recognize Seagate external hard drive using USB2

I have a seagate 2TB hard drive in a nexstar case (seagate usb port broke off). my laptop said the whole thing needed to be reformatted. Did that using the esata cable. Now if I plug in the usb2 cable (work computer doesnt have esata plug) its not recognized again! and I cant access the files stored on it anymore even with the esata cable. Anyone have any ideas, help, suggestions, anything would be a great help!
