    D: drive has "System Volume Information", can I delete or move?

    Windows 7 is installed on C: . I want to take D: out of the system, and have it completely empty.

    I have two directories on D:, System Volume Information and $Recycle Bin.

    I understand I can get rid of the $Recycle Bin, but I don't know about System Volume Information.

    Can I simply delete it, or is it part of the Windows Installation, or just info about the D: drive that is disposable?

    Thanks!

    If you're referring to the 100 MB + of space on the C: drive, that contains vital OS boot information and should never be removed.

    For clarification, could you post a screen shot of your Disk Management window.

    You can delete it. But not recommended to do so the usual way.

    System Volume Information is a folder created by W7 for System Restore. You can remove this folder by turning OFF System Restore for that drive/partition. (or sometimes it is necessary to turn it ON and then OFF to accomplish the goal).

    Note: any Restore Points for that drive (D: ) will be deleted. Should not be a problem in your case.

    moving system volume information

    the question is how do i manage this folder;
    how do i enable system restore, and have the system volume information be stored on the d: drive instead of the c: drive.
    the motivation behind moving desktop, documents, virtual memory, and system volume information is so that we can image the c: drive without all that clutter.
    i am not seeing the procedures on how to manage the system volume information, like i did with virtual memory

    The System Volume Information folder on C: contains important system information which cannot be moved elsewhere. If you have system restore or previous versions of files enabled for the volume that information must also be on C:. There is no way around this.

    There are technical reasons for this being the way it is. What you want to do would not work well if it were possible.

    Ya, you can move your data, but everything else has to stay with C to make proper images.
