Solved Boot Ready CDs/DVDs won't boot even after they are boot ready!

Yes, I just burnt the CD on another computer. And after the burning, it showed the files on the other computer. When I did put the CD in my computer, it saw as blank.

So it is hardware read problem.... CD is fine.
Same problem with DVD instead of CD?

There's simply something wrong with the read laser or logic. It uses another laser light and logic for writing as far as I know

I think that's right. A strong laser for writing and a weaker one for reading.

I don't know, but don't think so based on only a little experience. I've seen them help a little when there are read errors. Not too confident that it would help for a drive that seems to read absolutely nothing.

The thing is it read a DVD Movie a couple days ago, or yesterday. So, it does seem to read manufactured DVDs, but not burnt ones. That is strange. I will get new CDs/DVDs to burn and I will try to see it reads those, which I am not much hopeful, but will do to see the result.

I don't remember if you've referred to this earlier in the thread (it's getting to be a long one), but have you tried anything related to removing upper and lower class filters?

It relates to, at least in part, what I asked earlier in the thread:

Try and identify between what always works vs. what never works regarding CDs, DVDs, etc., and burned vs. manufactured.

Well a warning first: I'd recommend doing this only if you're comfortable messing around in the registry and know how to backup/restore/recover if something goes wrong.

First go into Device Manager, find your drive and open its Properties window, click on the Details tab, then find and take note of what shows up for GUID, class lower filters and class upper filters.

Then check out: How To Delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters Registry Values

I just went back to re-read the first few posts of this thread and am thinking the solution above might not be a solution afterall.

Seems some sort of firmware problem or hardware components failing intermittently.

If hardware is failing, it is failing; no solution to that. Our work was to see if it was or not.

Why it is showing as 'incorrect function'?

g is the DVD Drive.

That happens when I put a CD with data in it, but when it sees it as blank in Windows Explorer. When the drive is empty, it says 'The device is not ready'.

I also says incorrect function when I put an empty CD in.

Get the same "incorrect function" with a blank DVD-RW, Explorer shows it as free space and when trying to browse throws up "What do you want to do with this disc?"

When drive is empty Cmd says "device not ready" and WE says "Insert a disk".

Threw in a bad DVD-RW but with both Cmd and WE I could get a directory listing, just couldn't open any files.
