Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows
If you want the easiest, most convenient trouble-free experience then give this a go; if/when you are done it's as easy as deleting a file from Windows to remove WUBI.

If you haven't actually installed Linux yet to that Extended/Logical partition, then right click the Extended and click delete, then delete the Free Space that creates, then right click the C: Primary and click Extend to expand C: into the unallocated space.

If you have already installed Linux to that space you are screwed.

Good to see you getting it sorted, thanks for the update.

Did you use WUBI or did you actually install to a separate partition.

I used the Ubuntu windows installer then I selected it to install to the separate partition, it did all the work within 5 minutes, including formatting the filesystem to what it uses etc.
