From what little spec their are you have a AMD motherboard and you are inquiring about a i3 Intel chip. Intel chips don't fit or work on a AMD motherboard and visa versa.

dell wasn't all that helpful this time, they asked me if the computer was running slow or what not, and said they the i3 was the 'fastest' one. i told them i wanted to upgrade the cpu, and they asked if i wanted someone to come out and do it for me.

You might have mentioned that the PC is a notebook.

It uses Socket S1 mobile CPUs. (Definitely incompatible with anything made by Intel.) Whether its BIOS would support anything other than the CPU that the machine came with, I have no idea. Dell usually offers no information about configurations they have not sold. The "I3" advice was unusually bad.

Just out of curiosity,

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, CPUs / Processors, Processors - Mobile, Socket S1

(They're all "refurbished".)

One is a quad. Feeling lucky?

Well I will try again. The faster Intel cpu will need a Intel motherboard and maybe more. By the time you buy all the stuff to make it work you could buy two notebooks. You can't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear.
