How to use a hard drive as an external hard drive? Hi, I was going to get a new computer but due to unprecedented events I need to wait longer in order to be able to do that. So in the meanwhile, I dont have a place to put my hard drive in and be able to use the files within.
I was wondering if there's a way for me to be able to adjust it, what would I have to do and whether the windows installed in that hard drive cause issues when plugging it in to a computer with windows already installed..?
Thanks a lot in advance
btw, I found this and it made me think it could be possible: Newegg.com - Rosewill RX35-AT-SU BLK Aluminum 3.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure | My System Specs |

You can install your drive in that enclosure (assuming it is a SATA drive) and access the files on it without issue. The fact that it has Windows on it doesn't matter, your computer will continue to boot from it's boot drive. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built, Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop OS Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit), Win 7 Pro (32-bit) CPU 3.4Ghz 3770K i7, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo Motherboard Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, Dell Memory 8G, 3G Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5770, Mobile Intel 965 Sound Card High Definition Audio (Built-in to mobo) Monitor(s) Displays Dell 2409W 24" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard IBM Model M - used continuously since 1986 Mouse Microsoft PSU Antec Case Antec 100 Cooling CM 212+ Hard Drives 128G SSD OS; 1.5T & 2T Data on Desktop, 320G for laptop Internet Speed 1.5M down 1.2M up :-( Other Info Also have an Acer Aspire netbook, a home-built AMD Dual core (Minecraft server) and home-built Pent 4 all running Win 7. I use a dock with my notebook to access my spare internal drives (it's much cheaper than enclosures when using multiple drives and the drives require less room to store). One can either use a USB 2.0 or e-SATA connection (sadly, my notebook doesn't have an e-SATA port). | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom Build OS Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit CPU Intel i7-3930K Motherboard ASUS P9X79 WS Memory Kingston HyperX Genesis 32GB Kit (8x4GB Modules) 1600MHz DDR Graphics Card MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR Sound Card On board Realtek HD Monitor(s) Displays HP w2207h Screen Resolution 1680 x 1050 Keyboard Logitech G110 Mouse Logitech M525 (two in use) PSU Corsair HX750w Case Antec Two Hundred v2 Cooling Cooler Master GeminII S524 120mm (fan replaced with a 140mm) Hard Drives Samsun 128GB 840 Pro

I'm using four of the exact Rosewill units you referenced in the OP. They have worked perfectly for three years.
Just be sure and get the "3.5 SATA TO USB 2.0". I made a mistake, didn't look closely, and ordered one "TO USB 3.0".
Couldn't get it to work. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built OS Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit CPU AMD Phenom II 945 Motherboard GA-880GM-UD2H Memory 8GB Corsair Graphics Card Radeon HD 6670 Sound Card Onboard Monitor(s) Displays Hanns G 25" Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech Mouse Logitech PSU Antec 350W Case Antec Cooling Stock Hard Drives Samsung 500GB Internet Speed 5MB |
