Windows 7: Spanning 2 Hard Drives

Spanning 2 Hard Drives

I recently purchased a Sans Digital MobileRAID MR2UT+ for its spanning capability. Since I have only read about spanning and have never applied that knowledge (yet)... my question is: When you do spanning, do both drives have to be empty or can one of them have data already on it? Reason I'm asking is that one of my hard drives that I plan on using in the Sans Digital is almost full of video files that I don't want to lose.
