external hard drive disappears and reappears on drives list

after searching for some answers on the forums, i've been moved to post a separate thread. i have an external hard drive that disappears for some seconds only to reappear again on my list of drives. my computer alerts as if the external drive were dismounting then remounting. i have run various checks and nothing is presenting as abnormal or of issue. has anybody else experience this, what effect is it having on my computer and what can be done about it? thank you for any help/info. raze

Describe these various checks.

Have you run the hard drive manufacturer's disk utility?

Does this happen if you use another set of drive cables?

Does this happen if the hard drive is connected to some other USB port?

Does the same thing happen when you attach your external drive to another PC?

If it does, then a faulty cable/loose connection or faulty electronics in your external HDD may be the cause.

If changing the cable does not nelp, it is almost certain that the drive electronics is faulty.

Putting the drive ( of course after pulling it out from the original case) in a new external case should most probably resolve the problem.

Before doing all this try to recover as much data as possible when it is in a good mood.
