    is this a good upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading my current computer.

    My current specs:
    Celeron e1400 @2.0GHZ
    1gb DDR2

    If I upgrade to this

    Pentium D 925@3.0GHZ
4gb DDR2(laptop to desktop memory adapter)

will I notice a huge improvement in performance?

    If you believe:

PassMark - CPU Benchmarks - List of Benchmarked CPUs

the Pentium D 925 (search for Pentium D 3.00 GHz) may be a downgrade from the Celeron E1400. Other web sites make them more nearly equal, but either way, it's not a sensible upgrade.

If you upgrade your CPU try to find a q6600 or better, I had one for 4 years, great quadcore.

    Pedroc:

Per Bob's link, the Pentium D is probably a downgrade.

Would you normally buy oats for a dead horse?

If not, stockpile your money for the new PC. The less money you spend on upgrading the current machine, the quicker you will be able to build a new one. You need a new socket.

I would first upgrade the RAM. That will probably give you the best mileage.

You might notice a bit of improvement if you moved up to 2 or 4 GB of memory on the Celeron.

But I'd keep my expectations low and I would pay little to nothing to do it. Otherwise, I wouldn't upgrade anything that cost a dime on that PC. You are severely hampered by the CPU.
