    Mouse Double-clicking on Single-click

I have a wired 5-button Microsoft optical Intellimouse, about 5 yrs old. Lately it's double-clicking when I single-click, which obviously is quite annoying. It's not the software mouse clicking speed, that doesn't solve it. I switched to an old mouse temporarily and the problem didn't occur, so it's definitely the hardware. Driver is up-to-date.

So, this mouse is kaput, right? There's nothing I could do to fix this? Thanks.

Well, this is impressive. I googled the problem and found it's a common one with the intellimouse and there's a little free utility out there called, appropriately enough, "MouseFix", which I dl'ed and ran. It appears to have solved the problem. Cool. Saved me having to buy a new mouse.
