    Win 7 64 bit & Epson 1280

I have a rather ancient 1280 attached to my ZT win 7, 64 bit computer and all is well with it but there is a problem pertaining to another computer that I own.

I also have as my secondary computer an HP Pavillion HPE and I also had wanted to be able to print from this computer as well. I looked at the Epson web site and lo and behold I could not find any drivers for it but I knew at one time that some type of drivers had to exist since this printer is functioning quite well on my ZT computer. Both BTW have i7 processors and 24 and 27" monitors respectively.

Not only would I like to be able to print on my HP but seeing that this might be a problem if and when I must reinstall windows 7 on my ZT.

Now on two fronts I must find a solution to this problem. You might ask why don't you just buy another printer. The answer is simple. I am a 70 year old senior citizen living at or near the poverty level. In 2009 I had to file bankruptcy just to keep the apartment in which I now live when my father (obm) of 92 years passed away. Luxury items are a thing of the past and so I must make do with what I already have.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions as what I need to do? I feel that I am lucky to have been fortunate in getting the 1280 to function with my ZT. This printer is at least 8 years old and still works like a charm. How about Vista drivers - can they be made to work and are they even still available, especially in 64 bit?

    Any help is appreciated !

What operating system is on the HP Pavilion HPE? Do you want to install the Epson 1280 directly on the HP computer, or do you want to share the printer as it is currently installed on the ZT? I'm assuming the two computers are connected via a home router. From what I can tell, drivers are available for the Epson 1280 for most operating systems, including the various versions of XP, Vista and Windows 7. Check here: Epson Stylus Photo 1280, Drivers & Downloads - Technical Support - Epson America, Inc.

There are no Windows 7 drivers available for download from that link.

There are some at Windows Update:

    Microsoft Update Catalog

(If there are two sets with the same date, the larger package is usually for 64 bit Windows.)

I guess that it's not unusual for older hardware like this to only have drivers available through Windows Update. It's certain true of my old Brother HL-5150D. (Fortunately, the Windows Update drivers are essentially full featured, although I get no Postscript emulation with them.)

The HP uses the same O/S as my ZT - windows 7, 64 bit. I wish to install the printer directly. It is basically a "stand alone" computer and is rarely ever connected to the internet. I do not want to go the route of using a router. Epson no longer has drivers for the 1280 in Windows 7, 64 bit. The 1280 is ancient by all standards but is a workhorse that I've had better than 8 years.

I went to the Microsoft Update Catalog - first of all you must be using IE (Internet Exploder), which to me is a crock since I ditched IE for Firefox years ago. I do use Chrome for one Zynga game (Petville) due to flash issues. Anyway - I did find 3 drivers and none do specify 64 bit but assuming the larger is a 64 bit - this is the one I might choose and considering this might be my only alternative. I wish I'd kept the driver - I kept all the others for the computer and have them on a 250 GB external drive.

    Here is what I found:

Epson driver update for Epson Stylus Photo 1280 (M) Windows 7,Windows Driver Testing Client,Windows Driver Testing Server,Windows Server 2008 R2 Drivers (Printers) 6/21/2006 6.5 MB
I will give this a try later today and post the results. In the meantime if anyone else has suggestions - please let me know - thanks

Well there is some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that the driver I downloaded from Microsoft I could not make work period. The good news is that I decided to go ahead and let the computer see what would happen if I just let it do the search, I presume on Microsoft. Well I never expected that it would come up with the correct driver and install it. Not on such an old printer as the 1280! Everything is fine now - it works perfectly and just as well as on my ZT. I will file away the Microsoft update catalog as a future reference tho, as it might come in handy one day.

Thanks for the help and may all your computing be trouble free !
