The easiest thing is to remove the dirve letter from Disk 1 in disk Mnmgt

that still leaves Q: & F: drive letters when the ext drive is attached.

what is Ms Office click to run - is that something on your est drive that you were trying to run / install?

Please provide feedback, because I'm guessing about what's on your system far too much.

When you change something as instructed - screen shots after the change will make this go smoother.

since we're dealing with drives - post Disk Mngmnt and Dev mgr shots.

Ok - off to sleep so I can think straight.

Ok, now there's some info that will help.

I misread your comment about having 1T of data and thought that was the capacity of your drive - thanks for posting the correct device.

I don't know what the generic multicard usb device is - how did you determine that? Dev mgr? If you don't really have such a device - uninstall it from Dev mgr.

Ok, figured I'd ask about installing Windows, just to get that off the table. you did not install windows while the ext drive was connected. Scratch that off the list.

No, it shouldn't be a problem to do updates with the device attached, but that was a good question.

    Now, about DEAMON tools.

Unmount the ALL drives inside DEAMON tools - it only affects drives it owns, not real drives. Then, for any drives still present - remove them.

    Untick everything on General Tab

    APPLY

    untick everything in advanced tab

    APPLY

Remove DEAMON tools from your startmenu startup (if there)

hopefully I remembered or found everything needed to geet DEAMON tools out of the way and stop it from coming back when you reboot. Reboot after changes to be sure. If you want to use it later, remember to chnge the preferences. However, DEAMON tools is known to cause issues and even cautions users on it's own site. There are other alternatives - think about this whne we get past this issue.

STBV3000100 it is a 3TB harddisk Expansion Desktop Hard Drive | Seagate here, I have already taken out the audio CD and ejected daemon tools but the BD-ROM is still there, do I need to do anything?

I am not sure what Disk 1 is as well, it wasn't there before but it turned out to be a generic multi card usb device (what is this?), and nope, I did not install windows with the ext harddisk in (do updates count?) My ext hdd is plugged in when the com installed updates when I shut down
Ok, I'm hitting the sack. If uninstalling the generic drive H: and changing DEAMON tools doesn't rid you of it, reboot and then remove the drive letter in Disk Mgmnt. It might be part of DEAMON tools or it might be something else. regardless, get it out of the way.

When you're done - please post a new screenshot of disk Mgmnt.

BTW: I've used DtLite and like it - but I've found less intrusive tools.

    Thanks,

    Bill

Seagate offers a trial of their recovery software - you'll need room on another drive to recover files from the suspect drive. You cannot put recovered files on the same drive. I have never used their tool and wonder if the fubar drive will respond well enough. Put this in your toolbox for now and let's see if we can get the drive operating better before attempting to use recover software - it's generally slow, reading bits off the drive and assembling them into files.

If we're successful getting the ext drive operational, you won't need the recovery SW. You can use Explorer or robocopy to move the data off that drive. I'll ask you to clean the drive after your data is safe.

I also found this over on Seagate - might be worth considering since your drive is still under warranty. Have you spoken with Seagate regarding a RMA and if they will recover your data if it is a broken USB connector on the drive? Make sure they will do it at no charge, they might say "Sure, we can recover your data", but then charge you for it.
DON'T open your drive unless Seagate instructs you to do so - it might void your warranty.

Are there LEDs on the device? Are they steady on or do they blink? See what the manual can tell you about any indicators on the device.

I'm assuming that you can hear the drive when it spins up - since Windows "sees" the drive but doesn't know what the drive is telling it.

stoleaway: Before my braindump posts, you posted that a scan was running, hopefully you got clean results. What did you use to scan? It helps to know - saying ESET online scan came up clena or without finding anything is better than saying scan is clean. Other folks might read this looking for help and the information you give will guide them as much as the information I and others provide.

You're hanging in there and that's always a good thing. A good recommendation is to follow one solution path until it is exhausted. Don't be tempted to jump around, here or on other sites, trying to find a solution quicker. You did great pointing to another post with a similar problem, that helped me understand a bit more. I'm saying I'll stick with you through troubleshooting if we're working in concert. Sometimes, when folks look elsewhere, it compounds the problem.

    Thanks,

    Bill

stoleaway: I took another look at your system specs. It looks like you need to upddate to SP1. Please confirm the Win7 relase you are running. Post a screenshot of Control Panel - System (Rt click computer => properties)

You also say that the ext drive is a Seagate 3TB and you gave the model. However, your specs say it's a WD 10EAVS External USB Device.

    Code:
This says code, but it is just an example
To create a code box, click on the # sign up in the post editing menu,
    then past your output between
[CODE]paste text between the two CODE tags[/CODE]

download Speccy from Piriform (free version).
Run a speccy report and save the output as a text file
Post the information on this thread.
Wrap the output in a code box
    - this will create a scrolling box in your box that is easier to read
I tried to locate your machine on HP.... there are a lot of HP Pavillion Slimline models. Could you be more specific as to what you have and also update your specs.

Let me see what the HP recovery options are. There is a very good tutorial here, but let's go native if we can.
