OT is good.

I have a contingency plan in case you run into any issues with the Repair Install. I don't anticipate any problems becasue it's Windows fixing Windows. But just in case.... because you never know, ya know =:>

So your tomorrow is my tonight. I'll check back later.

Hi Stoleaway,

Finally it is coming to a repair install.

Before doing that, just have a look at my post here Problem with usb drives/ports showing in explorer and try it.

I have read in some related threads, that this problem could be caused by some driver conflicts. Restoring the usbstor files with fresh copies from the Windows FileRepository can hopefully resolve it, if it is indeed a driver conflict.

( I had no time and/or patience to run through all the posts in this thread. So I do not know whether it has been suggested and tried. If already tried, ignore this. )

jumanji: thanks for dropping in and providing help - on any drive issues. It would be a quick test to try what you propose. If that fixes the problem with the drive - that's great and thank you.

stoleway: try what jumanji suggests, then you can decide if you want to proceed with the Repair Install so you can get up-to-date with SP1. Perhaps the SP1 issue should be a new thread - we'll see what happens with jumanji's suggestion.

These are really two seperate issues - the drive and SP1. The Repair Install is to solve the SP1 update issue. I wasn't expecting SP1 to resolve the drive, but an updated system always stands a better chance of resolving issues.

Been quite interesting Bill for me as I am really a nuts and bolts person rather than this what seems to me intricate install set up stuff.

Drat! I kind of hoped that might fix your ext HD, but wasn't confident that it would.

Well, the next step is to do the Reapir install so you can hopefully update SP1. Your post was 9 hours ago, so perhaps you've already started or even completed the Repair Install.

After the Repair Install completes - try Windows Update to get SP1.

Onward and upward!

What does Computer properties tell you? Service Pack 1?

Did you run Windows Update from Control Panel or just clcik on the icon in the system tray?

Try running Windows Update from Control Panel - what updates are offered?

and finally, I hope, what does SFC /scannow report? use findstr to parse the log just like the last time. The CBS log, unfortuanately is cumulative, so findstr will the old errors too. Post the findstr output, as you did before and I'll take a look. You'll be an expert at this soon enough =:>
