Windows 7: All USB devices not detected by computer

All USB devices not detected by computer

A few days ago this started. Anything plugged into the USB ports of our laptop are not being recognized. Our printer, however, will scan and save to the computer if we use the controls ON THE PRINTER, but it will not respond if we try to scan FROM THE COMPUTER. It's as if the computer will receive information through the USB ports, but can not send out any information (thus we can't print anything).

Our iPhones are no longer recognized either, or flash drives.

I have tried uninstalling the printer, tried updating all every recommended update, and even tried "restoring" our computer back to a certain date a few days ago when it was working properly (can't remember what that's called). Nothing has worked.

FRUSTRATING. Any ideas?
