because it was system restore that caused the whole thing. And system restore clearly needs a reboot. But when i try to co-operate

BAM! it does the "please insert a bootable thingy..

FYI i did hard drive boot first in the BIOS

and now the hard drive is unknown local disk thingy so it cant be booted )

Well I still am not sure exactly what the problem is that we are trying to fix, but I will take your word for it and assume that
  • You manually attempted to restore your system to a previous point in time using System Restore from your System Protection settings
  • The restore operation went very badly.
In that case try this:
  • Boot the computer into BIOS settings and set the DVD drive as the first boot device.
  • Put your Windows 7 installation disk, or Windows 7 Repair Disk, in the DVD drive. (If you don't have either of these you will need to make a Repair Disk System Repair Disc - Create)
  • Boot the computer using the Repair Disk.
  • Select: "Repair My Computer"
  • Then choose "System Restore"
  • Full instructions here: Use Option 2: System Recovery Options
That will re-perform (reboot) the System Restore procedure, provided there is not a different problem.

Did you ever try the hard drive in another computer?
That would be your first step towards recovering files.
