The only way i know for sure is if both the laptop and desktops are very recent Macs, then you can use target mode over thunderbolt. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Apple 17" iMac MA199LL (Early 2006) OS Windows 8 Pro (32-bit) CPU 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo Memory 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) (upgrade) Graphics Card ATI Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory Monitor(s) Displays 17-inch TFT active-matrix LCD, millions of colors Screen Resolution 1440 x 900 Keyboard Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600 Mouse Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.0 Hard Drives Hitachi 320GB HDT721032SLA360 7200RPM SATA II (upgrade) Internet Speed 4 Mbps Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials Browser Google Chrome Other Info WEI:

I was thinking DVI or a D-Sub input. I suspect the HDMI is for output. Check the lappy's documentation too. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built Desktop By DataTech OS Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 CPU Intel i5-2550K, Differing ~4.4-4.8GHz No built in GPU Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Memory 16GB G.Skill Sniper 2133MHz 4x4GB Graphics Card ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 GeForce GTX 460 Sound Card Onboard Realtek 5-1 Monitor(s) Displays Samsung P2570HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Old, beat-up Dell USB From 10 yrs Ago Mouse Gigabyte m6900 wired PSU Corsair HX650W Case Inwin Dragon Rider Cooling Hyper 212 EVO w/two Noctua fans, push-pull, @1300 RPM Hard Drives Crucial M4 128GB for OS, 750GB Seagate MomentusXT for data, 500GB Seagate Constellation for storage Internet Speed 8-19 Mbs down, 3-4 Mbs up Comcast Cable Antivirus Norton Internet Security Browser IE 9, Opera when needed Other Info 4 case fans, LG BluRay-RE, ASUS DVD-RW, Mr. Fusion power generator with flux capacitor, 1.21 gigawatts. |

It's very rare for a laptop to have an input. I've personally never heard of one.
There may be an application you can download that you run on the desktop and laptop, which allows the desktop to connect to the laptop over wifi or ethernet. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Apple 17" iMac MA199LL (Early 2006) OS Windows 8 Pro (32-bit) CPU 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo Memory 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) (upgrade) Graphics Card ATI Radeon X1600 with 128MB GDDR3 memory Monitor(s) Displays 17-inch TFT active-matrix LCD, millions of colors Screen Resolution 1440 x 900 Keyboard Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600 Mouse Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v2.0 Hard Drives Hitachi 320GB HDT721032SLA360 7200RPM SATA II (upgrade) Internet Speed 4 Mbps Antivirus Microsoft Security Essentials Browser Google Chrome Other Info WEI:
