Is the computer plugged in? Have you tried AC instead of battery? what happens when you push the button> any noise, lights, etc?

Chuckle. I could be wrong, but I think the OP is referring to the Start Orb.

Do any other keys fail to respond? I used a "new" keyboard driver recently and lost all keyboard functions.

Do you get a menu if you right click? Can you open programs from the desktop/taskbar even if you can't open the Start Menu?

Maybe he needs a new "any" key..

@OP ... what happens when you press the windows key, does the start menu appear?? Has this always happened since installing W7 or is this a recent development??

On a std qwerty keyboard on the left side there are 2 keys between ctl and alt. the function key, and the windows key. I think you are saying the windows key doesn't bring up the start menu correct?

it has nothing to do with start button. start button is the orb on the bottom left.

    try pushing it

    Almost Same Problem

    More of a nudge.

I just got System Builder version of 7 home pro 64bit, and all is well but every now and then after a restart the start button stops responding. Most of the time it stays stuck on the mouse over glow effect. Ctrl-Esc does still open it, but not a mouse click as normal. Also all other task bar functions remain in tact. There is a standard windows ding when I click it left or right, but no options. Very odd. I have all updates, and have tried a few basic things such as hiding the bar, stopping explorer (whoops). The only thing that fixes it is a restart... At least that I know of. Not a game killer just annoying. So I thought I would share this info in case it helps anyone.

    Start button not working

Same problem here. Noticed a bunch of ridicule like those posting didn't believe the poor guy. The problem is real. I can right-click and get a pop-up menu but I can't left click and ctrl-esc doesn't work either. I get nothing when either happens. This started happening out of the blue today. I'd restart - I'm a Windows user right? - but I'm in the middle of something. Sure would like to be able to get to my control panel.

I have the same issue. At the beginning the issue simply dissapeared after a logoff/login, but in this moment become permanent! The bad thing is only my account behaves this way...

Does anybody know a solution or a workaround at least (of course, I can create another account, but I have lots of data there, so I prefer not to do it)?!
