it does not show on computer when plugged in it runs on usb 2.0 my windows 7 is 32 bit any help would be good

Probably a driver problem. Look for a driver at the manufacturer of the reader.

If your external drive is USB powered, try the Y cable that will give sufficient power to the drive.Some external drives give a seperate power cable to be plugged into the USB port. If it is powered by a brick, check whether it is OK.
No driver other than the generic driver that Windows will install is usually required. Check the optical drive on another PC. If it does not work, then it is a hardware problem.
If new, return it to the vendor for replacement.
It helps to know the make/model no. and a little bit of history when you raise a query.
