DVD-RW Refuses to work

My drive is an NEC ND-3550A with 1.07 firmaware (I think its the latest) and if i insert a disc into the drive it causes explorer to crash when i double click or right click on the drive, and no autorun message appears. the drive works fine under xp and ubuntu, the problem only occurs under windows 7 x64 ultimate Builds 7600(RTM) and 7100(RC). It is connected with an ide-sata converter because the slave connecter wont reach my hdd when plugged in ide, but i dont see how the adapter could be causing the problem because the drive works on everything else. and dont try blaming the discs its defo a problem with windows 7.

Hi tal,

I do see where the adapter would be the culprit. (not Windows 7 compatible)

Connect the dvd drive directly to the mainboard, and you'll see it works fine.

The adapter is not driver dependant, it converts signals itself, and if i plug my dvd in through ide then i won't be able to boot because the slave cable wont reach my hard disk.

Are xp and ubuntu on that same computer?
Or did you try the drive in another computer?

xp and ubuntu are on the same pc and are both x64 and i also have xp 32, but i think the drive is just incompatable with windows 7, because dookateh has the same drive and pretty much the same problem. I guess ill just get a new drive or hope MS fixes the problem, planning on getting blu ray when prices drop anyway.

Have you looked into the bios settings? Make sure the controller is set to compatible mode and not something like AHCI. Worth checking it out
