Windows 7 "Fixed" the file system of my USB stick; missing files.
Hello everyone. I have a USB stick that I keep various work programs on for while I am in the field or at a cutomer's house. Most are installers for antivirus/file recovery plus my custom logos. I have the files backed up so losing them is not the issue.
My problem is I plugged this USB stick into a client's Window 7 64bit machine, and the OS prompted to "fix the file system" i clicked YES, and upon completion I discovered most of the files were missing (or so I thought). I plugged the usb stick into my Fedora laptop and found a hidden folder with the missing files (I can tell because some are pictures and it shows the thumbnails) but they are all renamed. To make this even stranger, I found not all files were renamed and hidden, just some.
This is more like a question of why this happened and can it be undone. I, again, have backups of the files and have implemented two safeguards against in-the-field data loss (i.e. cloud backup, files on work laptop) in the future.
I am not very familiar with Windows 7 and it's auto file system checking. The USB drive is usually used to remove virii and malware from WinXP machines I have never had a problem out of it. I may install Windows 7 in a virtual machine and see if I can replicate the problem with the same usb stick and another to rule out a bad USB drive. The drive works fine now that I restored the files though.
NOTE: The USB stick was formatted and primarily used with FreeBSD 8.3. I suspect Windows 7 found something off. It is just puzzling to me as this same device has been used hundreds of times with WinXP and other Windows 7 machines and I never got that message before. Also, I have since deleted the hidden files and restored a backup to the USB stick so I won't be able to test specific instructions due to this. I will be eager to read how to undo this though if it is possible.
Thanks in advance.
