Well, Now My Hard Disk is Useless.

S.M.A.R.T. attributes for Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS FW. CC49

Late last night we had an ugly winter storm blow through here and it made the electricity flicker, so much that it made the computer shut off. But when I got it switched back on, something else changed, for earlier I had CHKDSK schedule a full surface scan after it started acting up while I was playing with Team Fortress 2.

It marked 13 sectors as "bad" and the SMART status reports 16 sectors waiting to be moved to spare sectors.

Not sure if the electricity flickering fueled it, but now it seems it's literally screwed itself.

Now that you think about it, while I was pulling this up prior to the scan, I did find some disturbing entries in the Event Log about the hard disk having "bad blocks".

I can't edit my long post in the Nintendo 3DS' web browser.

SeaTools for DOS is being run now and already it alerted me to some volume errors. Over 80 blocks were found bad.

There were issues with SeaTools where it would crash to the DOS prompt partway through a task. There were no issues reported within the last hour.

It sounds like you might want to contact Seagate to check on your warranty status, and start shopping for a new drive.

I keep my tower on a small UPS at home. It's an APC power-strip type. I am not concerned about how much run-time I'll have with the power off, but more about just having it provide consistent, clean power to my computer.

^the same here about UPS. They are cheap compared to most hardware a thunderstorm can take down.

    Four dittos from me too!

All my customers have UPS's on their equipment at my insistence. They pay for themselves over and over after each electric storm, or "dirty" power instance, comes & goes without a takedown.
