HDD not showing up when connected to router

I have a my book essential (western digital) and when I plug it in to the router (netgear N900) it never shows up. I had the same drive before, but the other was 1 tb this is 1.5 tb and is has the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. I am running windows 8 pro, could this be it? The other one I had, which was the same, when I plugged into the router, it showed up as "readyshare". Now, there is nothing there. Any help would be great!

I assume the N900 is a ReadyShare capable router.
I'm not sure how you do this in W8 without a Start Orb, but in W7 you connect the drive to the router, the USB light blinks, then you go Start > and in the search box type: \\readyshare and hit Enter and the drive should show up in My Computer.

Yes, it is, but why wouldn't ANYTHING be showing up in my "network". I actuall have "shell" which is a generic Start menu for windows 8. I have 3 phones, an Imac, and a tablet that are all running wirelessly on my network, but none show up!

Well if no devices in your wireless or wired network show up in Windows 8 then I would suspect you need to adjust your advanced settings in the Network & Sharing Center.

You would probably get better help by posting this problem in the Networking forum here.
